Event
One event in full: when and where it is, what it is about, who is organizing it, and a button to say you are going.
This is a background feature. Members reach it by tapping an event rather than by navigating to it.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”| Plugin | The Events Calendar |
| For RSVP | Event Tickets, with Events ticked under Post types that can have tickets, and an RSVP added to the event |
| Endpoint groups | Events. Event RSVP for RSVP and Who’s coming. Maps for the venue map |
| For the venue map | A Google Maps API key under Memberside → API Keys |
| Plan | Every plan |
Add it to your app
Section titled “Add it to your app”It is added for you. Placing Events, My Events or Create Event puts the event screen on the Background tab, because each of them opens events.
Open its settings from the preview to give it a title of its own, or to hide the attendee list, the calendar links or the venue map.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Title, Description | Shown at the top | Empty |
| Who’s coming | The list of people who RSVP’d. Only ever shown to people who can edit the event | On |
| Add to calendar | Google Calendar and .ics buttons under the event’s date | On |
| Venue map | The venue on a map, with a Directions button that opens the phone’s maps app. Only for events with a venue | On |
Ways in
Section titled “Ways in”- Tapping an event in Events, on the list or the month calendar.
- Tapping an event in My Events.
- Tapping View on a new event’s card in the News Feed or BuddyPress Activity.
What your members see
Section titled “What your members see”The event image, the title, the date and time as The Events Calendar words them on your website, the venue, the cost, the categories, then the full description, the organizers and the event’s website.
Times are the event’s own, in its own timezone, not converted to the phone’s.
The venue map
Section titled “The venue map”A venue with a location shows on a map under the date, with its address and a Directions button that opens the phone’s maps app.
A venue gets its location in one of three ways:
- It was found with address search on the Create Event form.
- Events Calendar Pro placed it.
- It was typed on the website with an address. The first time one of its events is opened, your site looks the address up with Google, once, and keeps the location. An address Google cannot find is not looked up again until the address changes.
A venue with no location, or a site with no Maps key, shows the address and the Directions button with no map.
Opening an event and RSVPing going
record → src/assets/media/single-tec-event.mp4
An RSVP button shows when the event has an RSVP from Event Tickets. An event with none shows no button, and nothing else about the event changes.
- Going takes a place. When the RSVP has a capacity, each Going counts against it.
- Not going is offered only when the RSVP has Enable “Can’t Go” responses ticked in Event Tickets. It takes no place.
- A member changes their answer by tapping the other one, or withdraws it altogether. Withdrawing gives a place back.
- A full event refuses a new Going. A member already going keeps their place, and anyone can still answer Not going.
- RSVPs close when the RSVP’s sale dates have passed, or the event has ended. The screen says so rather than taking an answer.
Answering in the app does what Event Tickets’ own form does on the website: the same place counts, and the same confirmation email, which Event Tickets sends. The app itself sends no notification.
A visitor who is not signed in is asked to sign in first, because an RSVP belongs to a member.
Who’s coming
Section titled “Who’s coming”The list of people who answered, going first and then not going, with a count of each. It is shown only to people who can edit the event in The Events Calendar — the author, and editors and administrators. Other members never see who else answered.
Edit and delete
Section titled “Edit and delete”The menu at the top of the screen offers Edit and Delete to people The Events Calendar lets change this event, and to nobody else.
Edit opens the Create Event form, filled in. Delete moves the event to the trash on your site, where it can be restored from wp-admin.
When it does not work
Section titled “When it does not work”| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No RSVP button on any event | Event Tickets is inactive, the Event RSVP group is off, or events cannot have tickets | Activate it, enable the group, and tick Events under Post types that can have tickets |
| No RSVP button on one event | That event has no RSVP | Add an RSVP to it on the website |
| An event with paid tickets has no RSVP button | Paid tickets are not in the app | Add an RSVP alongside the tickets, or sell tickets on the website |
| “This event is full” | Every place is taken | Raise the RSVP’s capacity, or wait for someone to withdraw |
| “RSVPs for this event are closed” | The RSVP’s end sale date has passed, or the event has ended | Extend the sale dates on the website |
| No Not going option | Enable “Can’t Go” responses is off for that RSVP | Tick it on the RSVP |
| No confirmation email | Event Tickets did not send it, or the site’s mail is not delivering | Check Event Tickets’ email settings, and that your site sends mail |
| No Who’s coming list | The member cannot edit this event, or Who’s coming is off | Working as intended, or turn the setting on |
| No Edit or Delete in the menu | The member’s role cannot change this event | Working as intended |
| No Directions button | The event has no venue, or Venue map is off | Add a venue to the event, or turn the setting on |
| An address and Directions, but no map | The venue has no location yet, Google could not find its address, or your site has no Maps key | Add a Google Maps key under Memberside → API Keys, with the Geocoding API enabled. Check the venue’s address on the website |
| A drafted or pending event opens for its author and “Event not found” for others | Only people who can edit an unpublished event can see it | Publish the event |
