Create Event
The form that puts a new event on your calendar, and the one that edits it later. Contributors submit events for review; authors, editors and administrators publish them.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”| Plugin | The Events Calendar |
| For RSVP | Event Tickets, with Events ticked under Post types that can have tickets |
| For address search | A Google Maps API key under Memberside → API Keys, with the Places API and the Geocoding API enabled |
| For feed posts | A News Feed or BuddyPress Activity in your app |
| Endpoint groups | Events, Event RSVP and Maps |
| Plan | Every plan |
Placing it switches these groups on for you when your site is connected. See Enable the endpoints you need if it was not.
Add it to your app
Section titled “Add it to your app”Drag Create Event onto a navigation bar or into the side drawer.
You may not need to. The Create button on Events opens the same form, and Edit on the Event screen opens it filled in. Place it when event organizers want a tab of their own, and use Restrictions to show that tab to their roles only.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Title, Description | Shown at the top | Empty |
| Post new events to the news feed | Each newly published event appears in your app’s feed. See New events in the feed | On |
| Restrictions | Which roles see the tab | Everyone |
Everything else follows your site: who may publish, which categories, venues and organizers exist, and the currency.
Who can create events
Section titled “Who can create events”The app asks The Events Calendar, and changes nothing about its rules.
| Role | In the app |
|---|---|
| Administrator, Editor | Create and publish events, and edit or delete anyone’s |
| Author | Create and publish events, and edit or delete their own |
| Contributor | Create events that wait for review, and edit or delete their own while they wait |
| Subscriber, and anyone signed out | Cannot create events. The form says so rather than taking one |
A role you have changed with a role editor plugin follows your changes: the app checks The Events Calendar’s own permissions for creating, publishing, editing and deleting events, not the role name.
This is not The Events Calendar: Community Events, where anyone may submit an event. That submission form stays on the website.
What your members see
Section titled “What your members see”A form with:
- The title and description.
- Starts and Ends, an All day switch, and the timezone, which starts as your site’s.
- A venue, picked from your site’s venues. People allowed to add venues can add a new one instead. See Venues.
- An organizer, picked from your site’s organizers. The picker searches your site as the member types, and shows more as they scroll, so a site with hundreds of organizers lists every one.
- Take RSVPs, for members your site lets add an RSVP. See RSVP.
- Share to news feed, when new events are posted to your feed. Unticking it keeps this one event out.
- Categories, from your site’s event categories.
- The cost and the event’s website.
- An image, from the camera roll.
A field that fails shows its message under the field, and nothing is saved until every field passes. A contributor’s event is saved as pending review, and appears on the calendar once it is published.

Venues
Section titled “Venues”The venue picker searches your site’s venues as the member types.
A new venue starts with address search when your site has a Google Maps key. The member types an address, picks a suggestion, uses their location, or drops a pin on a map. Your site then fills in the street, city, state, zip and country the member left empty, and stores the venue’s location. The event screen shows it on a map. See The venue map.
Every address field stays editable. With no Maps key the member types the address, and the venue is placed on the map the first time its event is opened.
Take RSVPs adds an Event Tickets RSVP to the event, the same RSVP its editor adds on the website.
- Places limits how many people can say they are going. Leave it empty for no limit.
- Let people say they’re not going offers Not going as well as Going.
- Replies open as soon as the event is saved and close when it starts.
Editing the event changes the RSVP. The limit cannot drop below the people already going. An RSVP nobody has answered can be switched off. Once someone has answered, close it on the website instead.
The switch is offered when Event Tickets takes tickets on events and the member can create events.
New events in the feed
Section titled “New events in the feed”With Post new events to the news feed on, your site posts each event to your community feed the first time it is published:
- On the Ultimate Member - Social Activity wall, which the News Feed shows.
- On the BuddyPress or BuddyBoss activity stream, which BuddyPress Activity shows.
It does not matter where the event was published. An event created in the app, an event created on the website, and a contributor’s event once it is approved are all posted, once. Editing the event never posts it again. Trashing or unpublishing it removes the post.
In the app the post is a card with the event’s image, date and venue, a View button, and Going when the event takes RSVPs and they are open.
These are never posted:
- An event whose author unticked Share to news feed.
- An event that has already ended.
- A password-protected event.
- Occurrences of a recurring series, and imported events.
The setting is on the Events and Create Event features. Your site posts when any app connected to it has it on, and only when the app also has a feed.
A BuddyBoss site with Posts in Activity Feeds switched on for events already posts events itself. Your site keeps that post, draws it as the same card, and adds no second one.
Not in the app
Section titled “Not in the app”- Editing an existing venue or organizer, or adding an organizer. Do those in wp-admin.
- Recurring events and series from Events Calendar Pro.
- Paid tickets. Add them on the website after saving.
When it does not work
Section titled “When it does not work”| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The form says the member cannot create events | The member’s role cannot create events in The Events Calendar | Sign in as a contributor, author, editor or administrator, or give the role the permission |
| A new event is not on the calendar | It was created by a contributor and is waiting for review | Publish it in wp-admin |
| “The event cannot end before it starts” | Ends is earlier than Starts | Correct the dates |
| “You cannot add venues. Choose an existing one.” | The member’s role cannot create venues | Pick an existing venue, or give the role the permission |
| The venue and organizer pickers are empty | Your site has none yet | Add them under Events → Venues and Events → Organizers |
| No Take RSVPs switch | Event Tickets is inactive, events cannot have tickets, or the member cannot create events | Activate Event Tickets and tick Events under Post types that can have tickets |
| “People have already replied, so the RSVP cannot be removed” | Someone answered the RSVP | Close the RSVP on the website by changing its sale dates |
| A new venue has no address search | Your site has no Google Maps key, or the Maps group is off | Add a key under Memberside → API Keys, and enable the group |
| Address search finds nothing | Google refuses the key for server lookups. A key restricted by HTTP referrer cannot be used for them | Add a Google Maps server key restricted by IP address, with the Places API and Geocoding API enabled |
| A new event is not in the feed | The setting is off, the app has no feed, the author unticked Share to news feed, the event is pending review, or it has already ended | Turn the setting on and save the app, then publish the event |
| Events published before the setting was on are not in the feed | Only an event’s first publish posts it | Working as intended |
| No Share to news feed switch | New events are not posted to the feed | Turn Post new events to the news feed on, and place a feed |
| The image does not upload | It is not a JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP, or it is larger than your site accepts | Choose another image, or raise the upload limit |
| The card is greyed out | The Events Calendar is inactive | Activate it |
